Thursday 1st February marked the long-awaited opening of Herring Bridge; the third river crossing in Great Yarmouth.
After a wait of three years – and then a countdown of 10 seconds – the new bridge in Great Yarmouth has finally opened. Sir Brandon Lewis MP stood on the control tower and pressed the button to lower the two bridge leaves at 11am. He said the moment was a culmination of years of hard work and that he was excited to be involved in the ceremony. ACE were proud to have a small part to play in the celebrations, with CEO Lou Gardiner and Project Lead Roy Cooper amongst the first to cross the bridge, having secured two much coveted tickets to board the Herring Road Train, which formed part of the inaugural convoy to cross when the leaves came down. The first procession included classic cars from East Coast Pirates, the seafront road train, a fire engine, a First Bus and local taxis, local running groups and schoolchildren, and other local guests. Music to entertain the crowds waiting to witness the historic spectacle was provided by Great Yarmouth’s own Harbour Radio.

Speaking about her experience this morning, Lou Gardiner, CEO of ACE, said, “I’ve been watching the build from my office in the ACE Great Yarmouth base on Alpha Road, so it’s been a great honour today to see it finally opened and to actually go across it. I live in Scratby, so I hope that the new bridge will not only make MY commute quicker, but that it will benefit all of the people that visit ACE, as well as the wider community in Great Yarmouth”
